The VFX Industry Is Upside Down (and Why a Plan B Is So Important)

Yes, that’s me. You’re probably wondering how I’ve found myself in this situation. Aside from gazing at this beautiful starry sky, I’ve been reflecting on life, as well as our conversation from the previous video. We discussed the idea of finding a Plan B. But before we delve into that, let’s take a step back for a moment.

Hello and welcome back to the blog. Today, I wanted to take a slightly different approach—something more personal. As many of you are aware, the VFX industry, along with animation and countless other sectors, is going through a rather tumultuous period. Studios are shutting down, projects are being shelved, and many talented professionals are, regrettably, facing redundancy. I, too, have recently found myself in that very position.

It’s rather interesting, considering that just a few weeks ago, I made a video about the importance of having a Plan B, and what that might look like. In reality, I’ve discovered that this has become more of a journey of self-discovery. It’s curious how life works like that, don’t you think? And here I am now, living through that very scenario. However, this isn’t merely about the industry being in disarray. It’s about recognising the importance of always having a backup plan—or at the very least, working towards one.

It’s essential that we strive to better ourselves, build upon our skills, and discover new ways to stay relevant as the industry evolves. When I first started, things were a certain way, and it’s remarkable how the industry often comes full circle, with its peaks and troughs. It’s fascinating, really—just a few weeks ago, I was talking about experimenting more with my camera, diving into some programming, and exploring different approaches to problem-solving.

Despite recent events, I don’t find myself feeling sad or disheartened, because that’s simply how things go sometimes. We can’t always predict these shifts, nor can we always prepare for them. As I lay there under the stars, I couldn’t help but reflect on the irony of it all. I was thinking about the next chapter, what my Plan B would actually look like, and how it was no longer just a concept, but something actively unfolding. And with that realisation came a sense of joy.

New ideas began swirling around, potential topics for future videos, and I felt an exciting sense of adventure. I hope you’ll join me on this journey—it’s going to be a good one. This blog might feel a little different, but trust me, the next ones will be even better. Now is the time for a rethink—a little conversation with ourselves about what the future holds and what we want to make of it.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this brief reflection, and I’ll see you next time. Let’s keep pushing forward. Take care.
